Are you allergic to your tattoo?

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Here at New Look Laser Tattoo Removal in Houston, TX we have seen several clients who are allergic to their tattoo ink.

How do you know you are allergic to your tattoo ink?

There are several indicators and you don’t have to have all of them to have an allergy to your ink.

1. Swelling in the area that was tattooed that won’t seem to go away.

2. Redness on the tattoo area and surrounding the tattoo.

3. Itching that will not stop.

All these are signs and symptoms of being allergic to your tattoo ink. Sometimes you are allergic to all tattoo colors. In our experience people who are allergic to their ink tend to be allergic to different shades of red more than other colors. Infact, your tattoo can be perfrectly healed in every area except for the color you are allergic to.

(Caution: Redness and Swelling are also signs of an infection so be sure to consult our New Look Laser Tattoo Removal staff or your doctor if you tattoo does not seem to be healing)

What do you do if you are allergic to your tattoo ink?

Don’t worry, it is more common than you think. We have seen several cases in both our Houston and Dallas locations. You simply need to get it removed. We can remove your tattoo just like any other tattoo. The only difference would be you would want to take an anti-histamine like Benadryl or Claritin while we are doing your removal. It is safe and you will have your tattoo and the itchiness gone in no time.

Of course, we are happy to answer any questions our patients have, but this will give you a head-start on some of the basics. We answer questions about which tattoos can be removed, the cost of the session, the number of sessions you’ll need, and the side effects of the procedure. Time Between Tattoo Removal Sessions

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

For most patients, 4 weeks is plenty of time to wait between tattoo removal sessions. This allows the skin to heal and return to its normal state, and also for the broken-up ink in your tattoo tattoo to have been flushed out of the body. For some patients, they may wish to wait 6 or 8 or more weeks between treatments - whether for financial reasons, scheduling conflicts, or because they take a little longer to heal.

This is appropriate - there is no maximum amount of time between treatments - your success in removing your tattoo does not depend on sticking strictly with a schedule of visits. This is different that with other medical advice - particularly in the area of taking medication - your body may need to keep a consistent or minimum level of an antibiotic to maintain effectiveness.

With tattoo removal it is different - during your laser procedure ink is shattered in tiny pieces, and the amount of time you wait does not affect the amount of ink that has been broken up. Waiting a minimum of 3 weeks will allow your body to flush away the majority of the ink. For most patients 4 weeks is more than enough. Waiting longer will not hurt - but it also will not help.
